Research Interests
Throughout his career, Jacques has used manipulative mouse genetics to interrogate biologic systems. As a graduate student, he developed transgenic systems to understand transcriptional and translational control of gene expression in haploid male germ cells.

Jacques then helped initiate and ultimately led the gene knockout program at Immunex. His group generated induced mouse mutants to understand the roles of specific cytokines, their receptors and ancillary proteins in the development and function of hematopoietic cells during health and disease. Selected highlights include (a) revealing essential roles for the metalloproteinase ADAM17 in the processing of multiple EGFR ligands, for RANK in the development of osteoclasts and for IL17R in the mobilization of neutrophils in response to infectious challenge, (b) developing a mouse model for rheumatoid arthritis that is independent of TNF, (c) establishing a skin biology effort based on uncovering a requirement for a novel serine-threonine kinase, RIP4, in epidermal differentiation and (d) revealing potent agonist and antagonist activities of novel IL1 family members in cutaneous inflammation.

Jacques continues to be interested in cytokine biology, especially in the context of balancing protective and pathogenic activities of critical mediators of inflammation.
