Dr. Lopez Garcia de Lomana research entails the use of experimental and computational tools to better understand how dynamics of gene regulation modulate cell states and their transitions. At ISB, he constructed a gene regulatory network model for the photosynthetic model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that recapitulates the exquisitely ordered transcriptional regulation that occurs prior to the transition into a new physiological state. Further, towards better understanding how microbes internalize environmental patterns, Dr. Lopez Garcia de Lomana experimentally demonstrated and characterized how the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae is capable to internalize new structured environments in a very short evolutionary time scale, a foundational work towards better understanding the emergence of growing threat phenotypes like antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Lopez Garcia de Lomana is also strongly committed to ISB education activities. He co-leads the ISB Summer Course and mentors High School student interns every summer. Currently, his research focuses on the development of new algorithms to generate translational gene regulatory network models to rationally predict better drug targets.
