Visions of the Future

A symposium honoring Lee Hood on his 80th birthday

Lee Hood, MD, PhD

Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, ISB
SVP & CSO, Providence St. Joseph Health

Lee Hood and Institute for Systems Biology have always been on the leading edge. In honor of Lee’s 80th birthday, we have put together a special day-long symposium with eight visionary speakers. Our presenters will talk about their research, where their science is going, and societal implications of their work. Please join us for a day of invigorating, thoughtful discussions, and help celebrate a true scientific luminary.

Early in his career, Lee was the beneficiary of advice that has played a guiding role in his pioneering work:

“If you want to practice biology, do it on the leading edge, and if you want to be on the leading edge, invent new tools for deciphering biological information.”

– William J. Dreyer PhD, Caltech and Lee’s mentor.

In honor of Lee Hood, ISB has created the Leading Edge Endowment. Each year an award will be made to an ISB scientist whose work breaks new ground, can catalyze a revolution in our understanding of biology, or that can result in major improvements in our lives.

About ISB

The Institute for Systems Biology is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) biomedical research organization based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded in 2000 by systems biologist Lee Hood, immunologist Alan Aderem, and protein chemist Ruedi Aebersold. ISB was established on the belief that the conventional models for exploring and funding breakthrough science have not caught up with the real potential of what is possible today. ISB serves as the ultimate environment where scientific collaboration stretches across disciplines and across academic and industrial organizations, where our researchers have the intellectual freedom to challenge the status quo, and where grand visions for breakthroughs in human health inspire a collective drive to achieve the seemingly impossible. Our core values ensure that we always keep our focus on the big ideas that eventually will have the largest impact on human health. ISB is an affiliate of Providence St. Joseph Health.
