ISB at Town Hall: Systems Biology & the Brain

Town Hall

APRIL 3, 2013: The human brain and nervous system are extremely complex: When something goes wrong, it is typically difficult—if not impossible—to cure. Cancers of the brain are particularly malignant and, at some point, most families will encounter the devastating effects of other brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, ALS, bipolar disorder, or Alzheimer’s. Combining systems-level thinking and an interdisciplinary approach, researchers at Seattle’s Institute for Systems Biology are using cutting-edge technologies to pioneer new ways of understanding the brain in an effort to improve diagnostics, treatments, and prevention of these diseases. This panel of experts—Ret. Army Gen. Peter Chiarelli, of One Mind for Research; Dr. Christof Koch, chief scientific officer at the Allen Institute for Brain Science; and Dr. Leroy Hood, ISB president and co-founder—explores the latest developments in brain-related research. Presented by Town Hall and the Institute for Systems Biology as part of The Seattle Science Lectures, sponsored by Microsoft. Series media sponsorship provided by KPLU.
Advance tickets are $5 at or 888/377-4510 and at the door beginning at 7 pm on April 3. Town Hall members receive priority seating. Downstairs at Town Hall; enter on Seneca Street.
